John S. McDonald, M.D. is one of a very few individuals in the country who is a double boarded specialist in the disciplines of obstetrics and gynecology and anesthesiology. He currently limits his clinical private practice to the work-up, diagnosis and treatment of his patients with pelvic pain disorders.
His dual training affords him a unique perspective, enabling him to understand the elusive problem of pelvic pain - a perspective held by few other physicians. Anesthesiology brings him an n understanding of local anesthetics and pharmacology of medications. Gynecology brings him an n understanding of the anatomy and function of the pelvis, while also aiding in comprehension of the many difficult problems associated with this confusing area of medicine.
He earlier championed the field of obstetric anesthesiology for 20 years, first as Director of Obstetric Anesthesia at the University of Southern California and the University of Colorado, as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University, and most recently as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at The University of California Los Angeles Harbor Medical facility. This career in obstetric anesthesiology culminated in the successful publishing of a 1344 page book - Principles and Practice of Obstetric Analgesia and Anesthesia in 1995. Most recently, in the past 10 years, he has devoted his clinical efforts to the many mysteries of pelvic pain. He first worked under the direction of his original pain mentor, Dr. John J. Bonica, who was the first pioneer in the field of pain medicine in the USA.
Dr. McDonald is available for medical consultation and treatment of female and male patients who suffer
from pelvic pain of unknown etiology or where there has been a failure of traditional therapeutic methods.
He is a diplomat of both the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Anesthesiology. His medical school
training was at the University of Iowa, with internship at the University of Oregon. He completed an obstetrics and gynecology
residency at the University of Iowa and an anesthesiology residency at the University of Washington in Seattle. He has held academic
appointments over the past 20 some years at The University of California Los Angeles, The University of California Irvine,
The Ohio State University, the University of Colorado, and the University of Southern California.
